Design and implementation of a home solid waste separation program that includes waste from market places in towns with waste disposal in the Nuevo Mondoñedo landfill (Colombia 2013-2014)

The Iberoamerican University Foundation (FUNIBER) takes part in the project “Design and implementation of a home solid waste separation program that includes waste from market places in towns with waste disposal in the Nuevo Mondoñedo landfill” together with Hera Holding, Cundinamarca Department, the Empresa de Servicios Públicos ESP from Villeta and the Town hall of Cornellá de Llobregat. This project is financed thanks to a call for technical assistance in the cooperation and development field from the Council of Barcelona and will be implementing during 2013 and 2014.

The project’s objective is to create a strategy to separate solid waste generated in market places in those towns using the Nuevo Mondoñedo landfill. It consists of 12 months of technical assistance and experiences’ exchange for the town of Vileta and the Cundinamarca Department, thanks to the 3 partners from Barcelona; a study of the market places, development of a proposal to exploit waste and finally, dissemination actions and possible uses of the project in other similar towns.

Currently, all wastes are disposed at the landfill, but there are not separated according to the type of waste. Separation of organic waste will reduce the transportation costs, increase the landfill's lifespan, reduce the leachate and generate reusable subproducts from the waste (compost).
