Master's Degree in Consulting for Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Program Presentation

The architecture and engineering sector experienced a remarkable leap in productivity with the incorporation of computer-aided design (CAD) tools. With the current adoption of the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, it is moving one step closer to the future by optimizing the construction design process and strengthening collaboration between the agents involved.

Our Master's Degree in Consulting for Building Information Modeling (BIM) has two optional specialties: one oriented to Architecture and the other toward Civil Works.

The Master's Degree in BIM with a Specialty in Architecture trains building-industry professionals in the BIM methodology and introduces the most commonly used tools and softwares, with special emphasis on Revit, so that they can apply this methodology in their projects and access new professional profiles that are highly demanded in the sector.

The Master's Degree in BIM with a Specialty in Civil Works prepares public-works industry professionals in the BIM methodology and incorporates the use of common tools in the design of linear works and structures. Those who complete this master's degree will be qualified to join BIM modeling teams for structures and linear work, profiles whose demand will continue to grow as public administrations require these professionals for their projects.

Who is the programme for?

This program is aimed at professionals who already have a background in architecture or civil works, from draftsmen to architects, and engineers. No previous experience in BIM modeling or BIM project management is required.

Diploma

Successful completion of the Program will lead to a Master's Degree in Consulting for Building Information Modeling (BIM), with a degree issued by the University where the student is enrolled.

Program Structure

The credit structure of the Master's Degree in Consulting for Building Information Modeling (BIM) program is shown in the following table.

  CREDITSa

a. The equivalence in credits may vary according to the university where the student has enrolled. One (1) ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credit is equivalent to 10 + 15 hours. If the student is enrolled in a university that does not belong to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the relation between credits - hours may vary.

Duration

The Master's Degree in Consulting for Building Information Modeling (BIM) has 60 credits.

The duration of the program varies from 12 to 24 months, depending on the student's academic dedication. During this period, the student must have successfully passed all the corresponding evaluations as well as the Final Project.

Objectives

Competencies

To prepare professionals from the Architecture and Engineering industry to join and perform in BIM projects, providing them with the necessary theoretical and practical skills to effectively integrate into a BIM team.

Outcomes

  • To understand the foundations of the BIM methodology and its objectives in the development of building projects, civil works, structure, MEP systems, etc.
  • To determine and analyze how the transition from the traditional project development methodology to the BIM methodology is carried out within a company.
  • To know the standards and file formats for working collaboratively across modeling disciplines and for subsequent sharing with the client or stakeholders.
  • To learn how to use the most widely adopted programs in the industry, with the option of specialized training in each, so that you can choose the one that best suits your needs or preferences.

Career Opportunities

  • BIM Modeler (Building)
  • BIM Modeler (MEP Systems) (Architecture specialty)
  • BIM Modeler (Infrastructure) (Civil specialty)
  • BIM Coordinator

Study Plan

The studies plan begins with a first part focused on common and general aspects of the BIM methodology, so that students can be competent in a BIM project, from its conception through its final development and into the maintenance phase.

Subsequently, in a second part, it focuses on the IT tools students will need to know and master to be able to apply this methodology in their projects, building a solid foundation for understanding the modeling process.

This second part has a greater practical workload than the first part, and students may optionally complete professional extracurricular work placements to apply the knowledge acquired in real BIM projects.

  • PART 1: BIM MANAGEMENT, IMPLEMENTATION, AND STANDARDS
  • PART 2: BIM MODELING - ARCHITECTURE SPECIALTY
  • PART 2: BIM MODELING - CIVIL WORKS SPECIALTY
  • PART 3: EXTRACURRICULAR WORK PLACEMENT (OPTATIVE)

As part of the program's BMI training, a pool of optional, non-mandatory extracurricular work placements is available that offers students the opportunity to participate in real projects at companies working with BIM.

During these extracurricular work placements, students are allowed to develop the Final Project, which is required in order to obtain the degree.

  • PART 4: FINAL PROJECT

The Final Project consists of 12 credits and is carried out in the last semester of the program. Under the guidance of a tutor, the student will demonstrate in a practical way what they have learned throughout the program.

The project aims for the student to propose the complete development of a BIM project within a company and to execute the BIM model associated with this project. The work will be supervised by a professional with experience in the field of BIM modeling or project coordination.
