Program Presentation
Images nowadays occupy an important space in communication. Although the technological development of digital cameras and smartphones facilitates much, knowledge about techniques, composition, and photographic languages are essential in learning how to tell visual stories, representing information through photographs, knowing how to read these representations, and creating works of art.
Photography is a high-level educational program, with a variety of resources for training in this sector.
Therefore, this course will address both basic and advanced aspects so that the student can plan, develop, and finalize a photographic project or provide answers to professional needs and integrate photography as a tool in work-related tasks.
In addition, the course offers alternative training path so that the student can choose the knowledge that is most useful or of most interest to them.
Who is the programme for?
The program is aimed at students, professionals, or amateurs who wish to broaden their knowledge of photography. Mainly:
- Professionals in the fields of Communication, Arts, and Social Sciences interested in broadening and deepening their knowledge of photography.
- Professionals from different areas, with or without experience in the industry, seeking to develop new communication techniques based on professional photography.
Diploma
The successful completion of the Program will award the student with the degree in Specialist Course in Photography.
After the program has been successfully completed, the student will receive the degree as issued by the University where they are enrolled.
Program Structure
Regarding the distribution of time for the Photography course:
- Being a distance learning Program and not subject to in situ classes, there is no specific starting date, by which the student may complete the enrollment process at any time provided that there is available space.
- The maximum time available for completing this program is 12 months. During this time, the student should have passed all of the corresponding evaluations.

a. According to the university. One (1) ECTS credit (European Credit Transfer System) corresponds to 10 + 15 hours. The relationship between credits and hours may vary for those students in the Program who are enrolled in a University not belonging to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

General Objective
- Mastering the general knowledge of photography considering technical skills, composition, lighting, and digital development for different professional applications.
Specific Objectives
- Mastering the techniques of composition and lighting in photography.
- Knowing the main histories and theories about photography.
- Introduction to digital development criteria and techniques.
- Knowing the characteristics and strategies of the different areas of professional photography.
- Knowing how to plan and carry out photo shoots.

Photography prepares students to develop their professional practice within different fields of photography such as photojournalism, advertising, architecture, documentary, social, educational, and scientific.

Description of the Subjects
MANDATORY SUBJECTS MODULE
- THEORIES AND HISTORIES OF PHOTOGRAPHY
This subject presents the concepts, histories, and theories that have contributed to the development of photography as a practice and knowledge. This subject provides the knowledge to understand the photographic language and the development of its devices and applications.
- BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY
This subject provides training in the fundamental aspects of photography based on knowledge of camera operations, rules of composition, branches of application, and the technical aspects of photography.
- LIGHTING
This subject presents knowledge about the characteristics of light, illumination, and the devices necessary to create variable environments for both studio and flash photography.
- DIGITAL DEVELOPMENT
This subject offers knowledge on the practices and techniques for the digital development of photographs, especially the review of work routine aspects, as well as some key concepts and tools for photographic development.
OPTIONAL PATHWAY
- CREATIVE DOCUMENTARY
This subject presents the development of documentary photography, especially focused on current events with a more creative and conceptual approach. Different styles of work and processes are analyzed.
- JOURNALISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY
This subject addresses various aspects of the professional practice, its requirements, techniques, and applications, in addition to knowledge on the history of photojournalism.
- ADVERTISING PHOTOGRAPHY
This subject deals with the fundamental aspects of advertising photography, from the idea to the final product. Specific cases are shown so as to understand the work-related routine.
- SCIENTIFIC PHOTOGRAPHY
This subject presents the knowledge and techniques of photography applied to various branches of science as a tool to enhance communication, information, research, and expression in the scientific field.
- VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY
This subject offers knowledge about photography as an anthropological, ethnographic, and social science research practice. Its influence as a symbolic means of interaction and knowledge production, integrated to the social system, is analyzed.
- PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECT MANAGEMENT
This subject explains photographic project management practices based on concepts and tools specific to the area, as well as the types of projects and their production processes.

Management
- Dr. (c) Michelle Moreira Soares. Photographer, journalist, and professor. Extensive university education with research experience in photography, body, and representation, especially in the field of Visual Anthropology. Has received scholarships and participated in social projects in different places.
Teaching staff and Authors
- Laia Moretó Alvarado. Multidisciplinary artist with extensive training in photography and various national awards and recognitions and participation in residencies and international conferences. Extraordinary career award and candidate for extraordinary master's degree award. Has taught at high school, university, and photography schools.
- Esteban Toro Martínez. Travel documentary photographer, ambassador for Sony, photographer for Adobe Lightroom, nominated for the World Press Photo 6x6 Global Talent, represented worldwide by YellowKorner Gallery, explorer and leader of photographic expeditions around the world.
- Citlali Fabián. Photographer and visual artist with a Bachelor's Degree in Photography and a Master's Degree in Visual Arts. Has published in several media such as New York Times, LA Times, Cuartosturo magazine, among others. Her work has been exhibited in several countries, such as Mexico, the United States, Spain, Holland, and Argentina.
- Miren Pastor. Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master in Photography. Has self-published three photobooks, has exhibited her projects in several international venues and won the "ING Unseen Talent Award Public Prize” in 2016. Currently organizes the Fiebre Photobook Festival and is part of the La Troupe collective.
- Ricardo Pinzón Hidalgo. Photographer with a background in Advertising and a Master's Degree in Photography with 23 years of experience in advertising and editorial photography, as well as experience as director of photography in magazines, including Esquire Colombia.
