Master in Marine Sciences and Technology

Program Presentation

The increasing importance in the sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems in national policies is demonstrated by the numerous international agreements signed in recent years.

Many coastal municipalities, responsible for ensuring the health of its beaches and coasts, increasingly require the presence of a specialized figure in coastal management and its resources, both from a biological perspective as well as from a tourism point of view. In addition to the growing need for trained personnel, there is a notable lack of training programs in national oceanographic disciplines, most of which are offered as postgraduate programs.

The program in Science and Marine Technology is focused on the basic applications that occur in coastal systems. The various oceanographic disciplines are presented in the context of of the boundless ocean environment. Once the existing interactions between the different disciplines are explained, a deeper and more applied study of the coastal environment is carried out through practical specializations.

Who is the programme for?

The Master Program in Marine Science and Technology is specially designed to satisfy:

  • Graduates of middle or higher grade that, by their personal characteristics or by their experience, may want quality training in the field of oceanography and coastal zone management.

Diploma

Successful completion of the Program will enable you to be awarded the degree in Master in Marine Sciences and Technology.

After successfully completing the Program, the student will receive the degree as awarded by the University where they have enrolled.

Program Structure

With regard to the distribution of the time it is established that:

  • To be a program aBeingt a distance learning program and not be subject to instructor-led classes, do not set a specific beginning date is not setof start up, and so that the student can register at any time, provided that there are places available.
  • For academic and learning reasons, the program has a minimum duration of six months.
  • The maximum time available to perform complete the program is two years . In this period of time, the student should have supplied submitted all of the appropriate evaluations, as well as the Final Project or thesis.

The structure of credits of the Master Program  in Marine Science and Technology is reflected in the following table:

  CREDITSa DURATIONb HOURS
1st Part 1: Oceanography and Marine Resources 40 11 400
2nd Part: Specialization 30 9 300

  • Among others.

Study Plan

The Master's Degree in Marine Science and Technology has a curricular structure based on 3 sequential training parts:

  • 1st PART: OCEANOGRAPHY AND MARINE RESOURCES (400 HOURS)

The first part allows one to know and understand, first, the theoretical, conceptual and historical foundations involved in environmental issues and, secondly, its organizational, social and technological implementations.

The aim is to get students to acquire an overview of the Environmental field, through the different but related multidisciplinary topics.

The subjects and the corresponding hours that make up the first part are shown in the following table:

1st PART: OCEANOGRAPHY AND MARINE RESOURCES
# SUBJECTS HOURS
1 Dynamic Earth 30
2 Coastline and marine erosion 30
3 Marine sediments and glacial influence on the sea 30
4 Basic marine ecology 20
5 Marine Organisms 30
6 Marine Communities 30
7 Sea water 30
8 Water Circulation 30
9 Sea Water Chemistry 30
10 Fishery Exploitation 20
11 Marine Crops 20
12 Navigation and marine transport 20
13 Mineral and Energy Resources 30
14 Marine Pollution 30
15 Other interactions between Man and sea 20
TOTAL 400
  • 2nd PART: SPECIALIZATION (300 HOURS)

The specialization allows the student to delve into whichever disciplines of the environmental sector are of interest, both professionally and personally.

The objective is to achieve the maximum degree of specialization in the environmental field, achieving a complete, comprehensive and up-to-date training in this field.

The specialization is comprised of the following subjects:

2nd PART: SPECIALIZATION
# SUBJECTS HOURS
1 Management of water pollutants 50
2 Technology in marine aquaculture: toward a sustainable aquaculture 50
3 Fishery Management 50
4 Management of natural marine protected areas 50
5 Biological pollution management 50
6 Business environmental management and audits 50
TOTAL 300
  • 3rd PART: FINAL PROJECT - MASTER THESIS (100 HOURS)

The Final Project -Masters Thesis, with a credit load of 100 hours, is to be focused on a topic related to their specialization.

3rd PART: FINAL PROJECT - MASTER THESIS
# SUBJECTS HOURS
1 Final Project -Masters Thesis 100
TOTAL 100
